Vice Admiral Shelby
Logan led a convoy of ships to the Tau sector in order to tame the unruly
frontier and return it to the Federation. Her carefully laid plans were
disrupted immediately upon arrival by the pirate's ruthless use of biological
weapons on the helpless populations.
Working with the
resources she had on hand as well as what she could make and what the
Federation in Rho could spare, her team worked tirelessly to battle an
invisible enemy on one front while driving the pirates out of their bases and
shutting down their predatory activities once and for all.
Now she has her
hands full as the war with the plagues and the pirate chase enters their final
phase. She has turned her attention to the east where a group of Taurens have
set up a Confederation. Isolated, hyper suspicious, and very enigmatic, the
admiral had her work cut out for her. Diplomacy on this scale was something new
for her and the people with her. But as they worked to find common ground they
found more than they bargained for…

Chris,
ReplyDeleteI finished the book. I really enjoyed it. I have to say while there was a lot of fluff in the book, the ending was great. Have you ever seen Brandon Sandersons youtube lectures on magic systems. He goes on to say that magic falls into two types mystical and magic systems. Magic systems need to have rules restrictions and cost so the users can understand follow along and be part of the system. Then the mystical would be where magic features are large awesome and completely mysterious. Mystical can only be used sparingly and with great care to hook the reader and bring a bit of blam to the story. A perfect example of this would be Gandolf the Grey. When he fights the huge fire beast at the end of the first movie. You know Gandolf is a wizard and has magic but he goes till the end of the movie before he uses any of it.Then in one stunning seen he goes huge and shattering but you are left with no clue how he did it or how it works. You don't really question it because he is wizard and they do huge and powerful things and Gandolf's magic wasn't part of the story till it suddenly was in a huge way.
I think when you stared writing these book you created Admiral Irons as part of a magic system through engineering and bureaucracy. You laid out the rules and the cost of how everything worked and we understood it. Now you have added all these other characters to the magic systems and then elevated Irons to a mystical level where he preform's these huge feats with no explanation or rules in a very god like manner. For example take the end of the book and compare it to the statement God said "Let there be light".
Please don't change this and maybe highlight it more as most of us fell in love with Irons as a charterer but he has been written out of being a main char and it allows him to stay in a really cool way.
Thanks Soren.
DeleteYeah, I initially had Irons repair things with his implants and knowledge, then transition to nanotech.
I sometimes miss the old way. It allowed him to do some of the work, but delegating it to Proteus or to another subordinate is normal for an officer, especially a flag officer.
You will see a bit more of him in Sparks and Inferno. Plus a couple of the short stories coming up.
