Chapter 4
In Hyperspace
Captain Fox checked on the status of repairs. He nodded in passing to some of the techs and continued making the rounds.
The light cruiser was the only survivor of the recent battle of 190. Runner was living up to her name, running for her life and potentially billions more. It hurt though; it burned like fire to know that Commodore Knight and most of the rest of the squadron had given their lives so that they could survive and spread the word of the invasion.

The two Necron cruisers chasing the Federation light cruiser realized within a day that they were out classed. There was no sign of the ship on any of their hyperscanners at their highest speed. The division was too used to running down civilian ships and pirates in Omicron, using their superior speed and technical advantages to run them down.
The two ships got close enough for their hyperbubbles to join and then entered a quick debate on what to do. Their mandate was to run the ship down; there could be no witnesses to their conquest.
The junior shipmaster was displeased with the adament order that they continue the chase but had no choice but to obey.
The two ships set out on their best speed to the next star system in the jump line.

Eight additional ships gave chase; however, they were behind by several days. The two battle cruisers had the six cruisers arrayed ahead of them in a vain attempt to pick up the spoor of the fleeing ship or the Necron ships acting as beaters. They were not successful, however, primarily due to their low speed, unfinished repairs, and low fuel.
The individual shipmasters contemplated their orders. Once the Federation ship was run to ground and either destroyed or captured, their orders were to secure the star system and wait for reinforcements.
The only question was when and where that would happen.

Captain Omar Milancho contemplated the fickle fate and the Spirits as his light cruiser Stanely kept moving north. They had gotten the word out to the Federation, now he wanted to rejoin his squadron and get ready to rock.
The navigational team had been confident enough in their trips through 187 to perform a skip. They had just successfully performed the skip and were cycling back up to gamma band and on track to hit 188 in three weeks time.
He was feeling pretty confident that they were doing well. They had managed to backstop the ansible transport in 178 and report in; they knew help was on the way. Things were looking up. Now they just needed to return to their squadron and let them know the good news.
