... Oops! I almost posted a snippet from J5! My bad. Here you go. ;)
“How is Argus doing sir?” Commander Saul Garretaj
asked as he met the Commodore at the airlock.
Horatio stopped his forward progress for a moment then
snorted. “Am I that predictable Commander?” he demanded, instinctively moving
to one side to let others behind him pass by.
Saul shrugged. “I know you like to finish your check of the
yard with the ships about to launch. You usually end it with the one that is
closest to launch. Ergo, Argus. It sort of puts a cap on it and ends on
a high note.”
“Making it a pleasant task in the end in other words?”
Horatio asked with a smile. He wasn't ready to admit the tours weren't tedious
to him. He enjoyed being in the slips. What he didn't enjoy was the transit
time in between, or the spot inspections he was supposed to perform. Or the
backlog of paperwork that inevitably piled up in his absence. “Sort of. I check
each slip and spot check each module section randomly. Or mostly random,”
Horatio admitted as he indicated they should proceed.
Saul nodded thoughtfully. “Almost randomly sir?” he asked.
“Well, I've learned to read between the lines. To also pay
attention to the scuttlebutt and to check-in to potential trouble spots.
Sometimes a spot check at the right time can cool heads and get people paying
more attention to what they're doing,” he admitted.
“And let you get eyes on problems so you can decide on the
spot what to do about them sir?” Saul asked.
“Something like that,” Horatio admitted. “What's up?”
“Admiral Subert sent me along to check on you. Specifically
to, and I quote, run him down, drag him kicking and screaming to get cleaned
up, and then detail a Marine escort if necessary to get him to the party,” he
said with a straight face.
“You forgot the end quote there,” Horatio replied with a
chuckle. “Okay, okay, I'll behave.”
“You'd better. You know he likes all his people on deck for
occasions like this. And I've got to get moving myself since I'm the one
handling the organization and execution of it,” the Chief of Staff said,
shaking his head.
“You could have delegated,” the Commodore replied mildly.
It was Saul's turn to snort. “As if. I know you sir. Anyone
else wouldn't have the voltage to get the message through to you. You're
probably dreaming up all sorts of ways to get out of this.”
“Maybe,” Horatio said without admitting too much. “But I'm
not like Admiral Irons. I can handle the occasional party. I even enjoy them if
they are fun,” he said.
“This isn't going to be fun. Its work, just in a stuffy
uniform and keeping a straight face as you make dinner conversation with people
more interested in talking to our Bekian guests and eating rubber chicken until
you gag,” Saul said.
“Lucky us,” Horatio replied with a grimace.
“Yes. See you there?” the commander demanded. “I think he
was serious about the Marine thing sir.”
“With bells on. Tell Admiral Subert aye aye sir,” Horatio
replied solemnly.
Saul sized him up and then nodded curtly. “Good.” He cocked
his head. “Sir.”
“Dismissed Commander,” the Commodore said, motioning him to
get moving. “I don't want you to miss your own party,” he teased.
Saul gave him a wary look and then got out while the
getting was good.
Horatio inhaled and then exhaled heavily. Damn it, now he
was committed he thought.

Nice snippet. Any problems posting this one?
ReplyDeleteYeah, the little thing I used to break the scenes up is invisible and won't change color no matter what color I choose. Grr, argth.
DeleteDKH: Lol. I'm into chapter 3 of J5. up to 97 pages so far. I've got 4 scenes in chapter 3, then 4 or more in each of chapters 4, 5, and 6 to flesh out and then those chapters will also be done.
But lunch calls! (or at least my tummy!)
Chris, Yay! I can barely wait for J5. I just reread J4. I am quite anxious to see what happens with Shanti and the Kits, Lil Red (how the heck did she wind up adopted and w/ Jethro when J is away from home?). Operation Aries..sigh, sooo many questions...I can't wait for EE.You already said that Horatio is not going to have a smooth adventure in Bek, so I am very anxious to see how that goes! Lots of subtext and sub stories hinted in the times we have been to Bek, now with Horatio who is very blunt and kind of burned out on politics from home and such, that should be very interesting...sounds like you are making wonderful progress!!!!!! Please please keep it up!
DeleteChris, wow! Thank you. Thank you for feeding my addiction! I am so looking forward to when this book comes out! I can barely wait...and that was a little mean...teasing about J5! j/k. I am looking forward to that as well. I am really intrigued by that story line as well, not only from the main story line of Jethro, but because of the tease you put into Retribution. Thank you again!
ReplyDeleteHi Chris, is EE still on schedule for release at the end of the month? (getting a little shaky from withdrawal cravings) Hope you are making tremendous progress on J5 (for the purely selfish reason that I can't wait to see J).
ReplyDeleteThat is up in the air at the moment. My knee jerk reaction is no. Rea's vacation got extended. (She's driving back and forth from Alabama to Arizona and can't edit on the go easily)
DeleteI had made some great progress on J5... and then found out that I'd shot myself in the foot with timing. I had to rewrite the first 9 chapters which bummed me out and totally threw off my rhythm. I managed to sort it out and I even got back into my groove over the weekend.
I'm at a sticky part though, so I'm skipping around between chapters 10-15.
I'll try to remember to post an EE snippet later today or tomorrow.
Chris, thank you for the update! No worries about the rewrite, that is what makes your books so interesting is that you do keep the timelines straight and your attention to detail means there are no internal inconsistencies you see in other long story arcs...look at Piers Anthony and his 'trilogy'...lol....I am sure that J5 will be awesome...especially for the hardcore NCO now warrant...LOL.....AL to AZ is quite a journey ...did that a time or two....long ago...and remember thinking...wow, those cows in AZ and TX sure are ugly....
DeleteThank you.
DeleteThe timelines are a pain to keep straight and are getting harder the more things get entangled. And when I switch from 1 perspective to another... or 1 time chop to another... ugh. I'm glad I've got the betas to keep me honest.
Or in a case like this, I also have the problem of a certain fat brown brat in the way... Okay, thank you Loki, yes find a place to park your booty... no, I don't need my face swiped with your tail... sure doing it on top of Baby is fine with me. lol
Few!
Anyway, Yeah, she said she was flying out to AL, then driving back to AZ, going to see someone, then drive back to AL, then fly back to AZ.
To me, that's too much travel. :P lol I haven't left Cali in 26 years. lol
They've been trying to get me to go to various places. I said I'd go, but only if I had my desktop under 1 arm and cat carriers under the other. And I would go into serious withdrawal if I was without my PC for more than 8 hours...
The family go on trips every 2 years. (usually a cruise) I wave them good bye then go back to writing. :) You'd be amazed what I can get done without them underfoot! The furballs are a different story.
Yeah, I remember when we moved cross country each time that there were some funky looking bovines...
And I also noticed that you have the cast of characters now added to the books to keep everything (and everyone) straight! Thank you so much for sharing your world of the federation with us!
ReplyDeleteNo problem.
DeleteThe betas talked me into adding an introduction to keep things straight too. :)
a bit of prologue probably is a good thing..gets you back in the groove when writing that story and remind the readers where they left off if it has been awhile..
